Erectile Dysfunction
Sex is a normal, healthy part of life. Unfortunately, for an estimated 15 to 30 million men in the United States, it can become a frustrating and problematic issue. Failure to achieve or sustain an erection happens to most men at some time or another, but for about half of men over the age of forty, the problem can become chronic because of a variety of factors. When this occurs, it is known as erectile dysfunction, or ED.
Understanding Erectile Dysfunction
Common causes of ED include certain medications, alcohol consumption, lack of adequate blood flow to the penis and psychological issues. Low testosterone may contribute to ED. ED can also signal more serious medical issues, such as heart problems.
Medications
Oral medications known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) allow muscles in the penis to relax and increase blood flow. This, in turn, produces an erection during sexual arousal. These medications include Viagra™, Levitra™ and Cialis™ among others.
Lifestyle Changes
For many men, simple changes like reducing alcohol consumption or revitalizing their relationship with their partner can successfully reverse the effects of ED.
Vacuum Erection Device
This device creates an erection by drawing blood into the penis. After the patient applies a small elastic ring at the base of the penis, the erection can last for up to half an hour.
Self-injection
A small needle is used to inject a very small amount of medication into the base of the penis prior to sexual activity. Another form of therapy called MUSE™ uses a suppository dropped into the tip of the penis rather than a needle injection.
Penile Implants
If other treatment methods have failed, your provider may recommend a penile prosthesis. This is a highly effective method of regaining full erections and achieve spontaneous sex again. Men who have had the penile prosthesis placed generally report very high levels of satisfaction with the procedure.
ED treatment varies from patient to patient, and your provider will use a range of diagnostic tools to determine the best options for you.
